NCShakes Youth Theatre Presents Young Regional Actors
HIGH POINT, N.C. – NCShakes continues its Youth Theatre program, staging two productions November 7 through November 9. Participating students range in age from 12 to 18 and auditioned for the program. They come from Guilford, Davidson, Forsyth, Stokes, Iredell and Wake Counties. The company of 29 young actors has been rehearsing since October 5 and will also engage in Master Classes in voice, swordplay, text and dance taught by professional theatre artists.
The Fall Youth Theatre program is supervised by NCShakes Outreach & Education director Sherri Raeford, who brings years of experience in theatre education for young people to the NCShakes staff. “The Youth Theatre program is a strong priority for NCShakes,” says Raeford. “The exciting process of taking text from the page to the stage fosters self-esteem, develops reading comprehension skills and improves verbal skills. Collaboration, team-work and critical thinking skills are also nurtured through theatre activities and this production process.”
Featured productions will be an adaptation of “The Tempest” edited and directed by Sherri Raeford, and “The Hamlet Thrill-mageddon,” a zany spoof of Shakespeare developed by Don Zolidis and directed by frequent NCShakes company member J. Hernandez.
General seating tickets are $10, available in advance or at the door; however, seating is limited. Performances take place at NCShakes Spirit Center, 807 W. Ward Avenue in High Point. “The Tempest” can be seen on Thursday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m. “The Hamlet Thrill-mageddon” can be seen on Friday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m.
